Emmet Kane - "Faith and Hope" 2008
“Faith and Hope” Ebonised burr oak with 23c gold leaf wall piece, 1200mm x 850mm.
This sculpture is located on one of the walls in National Museum of Ireland and it's a part of Emmet Kane's exhibition - "A Journey". At first glance, it looks like a plain 2D object (for example, a painting) hung in the gallery space and it suggests a clear association with the wheel and the carriage. A wheel here looks like bruised, crushed and stretched by forces acting from the outside. In the middle of the wheel, there is a golden circle with a specific surface given by gold leaf. On the remaining part of the object we see tiny chisel marks - there are hundreds, maybe thousands of them on such a small surface. These artistic treatments gave to the object an unusual palette of gray - brown colors in specific shades. The whole object seems disturbing, depressing but only until the viewer focuses on the golden groove in the center of it. The opposition between colors (golden and dirty gray), materials (wood and gold leaf) and specific surfaces makes this that after some time we stop noticing the whole disturbing environment. The title of this work - faith and hope- arise unequivocal religious associations. The circle symbolizes God's law, infinity, absolute, eternity, perfection, inner unity, harmony, balance, accuracy, completeness, sky, sun, soul, spiritual element, feminine, time, protection against demons. A circle inscribed in a square symbolizes a spark of God hidden in the matter.
Emmet Kane about his work "Faith and Hope"
"This was part of the Image of Longing exhibition in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in NCG in 2008.
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children played a significant role in my life since birth. I was born with a medical condition and spent the first 16 years of my life attending Crumlin under the watchful eye of the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff. The inspiration for my piece is Faith and Hope. A large wall sculpture made from wood, I have used many different elements from my current work including texturing, gold leaf and ebonizing. I hope that this piece of work will, in some small way, give Faith and Hope to sick children, their families and the staff of the hospital, as this hospital has given to many others in the past."
